a Raya Card for You
Words. Words. Goddamit! Where are the words?!
One visit to Grandma's house and suddenly, I have the responsibility to write her a Raya card. My sister is obviously out of the question since she has SPM to wrestle. My Mum and Dad couldn't do it because they're practically busy for everything else but writing Raya cards. And so, automatically, it is up to me....
Look - I don't mind sending Raya cards to my grandmother. I mean, it is really no big deal when you look at it at one point. But I'm supposed to write something inside the card. To make it personal. To differ it from the other Raya cards that were sent by everybody else. To say that this card IS MEANT FOR YOU BY YOURS TRULY. But what? I try to explain this to my sister because she's been badgering me about it. It is her idea.
But talking to people older than you is like talking to a brick wall. Your sentences are cut short, your alternative ideas are shunned aside and the ending is always them stomping on you and saying you better get it finish soon or else. To my family, 'else' is usually constant nagging sessions in the future and reminding me how I failed to do whatever I was supposed to do. Sometimes talking to your own family is like waiting a big lecture to come. And whining DO NOT work anymore once you're in teenhood.
What do you write about to your grandmothers anyway? Hey, how's the dodol cooking? Or, do you still get duit raya after all these years? Really. I'm not close to her anyways. Sure I talk to her everytime I see her but there is nothing much you can talk about with your granny.
I don't know why I fussed about writing this Raya card. She can't read anyways. :)
-- Selamat Hari Raya everybody!
